Katie Lannan
american journalism student scholar
Katie Lannan is a student at Boston University. She will graduate in 2012 with a Bachelor’s of Science in journalism and a minor and concentration in political science. After completing her degree, she hopes to work for a newspaper in the New England area, or as a Capitol Hill correspondent, though she also is deeply interested in politics and communications law.
A National Merit Scholar, Lannan graduated from Londonderry High School in Londonderry, NH, in 2008. She was the editor in chief of the school’s award-winning student newspaper, the Lancer Spirit. During her senior year at LHS, Lannan won a New England Scholastic Press Association Special Achievement award, in the category of Design and Layout, for her work on the paper’s front page. She also was chosen as New Hampshire’s female representative for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference program. As a member of the LHS Lancer Marching Band, Lannan has played for then-President George W. Bush and marched on the Great Wall of China.
Lannan spent four years as a teen correspondent for the Eagle Tribune, a regional newspaper based out of North Andover, MA. She has also had articles published in the Derry (NH) News and in Merrimack Valley Magazine. She is a staff writer for the Daily Free Press, the independent student newspaper at BU, and is interning in the Web and New Media Department at New Hampshire Public Radio.
In her spare time, Lannan enjoys reading, photography, and copyediting anything placed in front of her.
Lannan maintains a blog in which she responds to minor annoyances and the occasional serious concern in a series of humorous open letters, written primarily to public figures, complete strangers and inanimate objects.
